How dependant are you on social networks?

Today I woke up just to go through my daily routine. What is this you might ask?

  1. Grab a cup of coffee (can’t be productive without it)
  2. Go through my emails, thinking of the to-dos for the day
  3. Scroll through my RSS reader trying to find at least one thing to learn
  4. Finally do a quick read through my social networks of twitter and facebook

Now you may be wondering why you must know what my routine is… I bring it up mostly because of that last point. Facebook and Twitter have become HUGE, with a large audience checking them many, many times a day.

If I may ask are we too dependent on these networks?

This question has been mulling over in my mind today with the recent news of Twitter suffering a denial-of-service attack this morning. Check out the following article:

Facebook Down. Twitter Down. Social Media Meltdown. – http://mashable.com/2009/08/06/facebook-down-3/

It was a stream of events that made each Social Media go down and leave us frustrated that we can’t access our favorite site that we spend so much time on every day.

First of all, a hacker attacks Twitter and makes its servers so slow it becomes unusable. Then the frustrated twitter users make their way over to Facebook to get their social fix, but the spike in traffic causes Facebook to go down. You can now see the chain of events that can cause havoc across the interwebs.

The Michael Jackson death just showed how quickly news spreads across Twitter, and when things like this go down the whole internet feels the sting!

How do you use social networks? Do you think you depend on them too much? How do you handle it when you can’t access your favorite social network? Please comment below…
