MAMA – Search Engine for a Web Pages Structure

I recently read a couple articles about this new type of search engine that is supposed to come up in a few months time called MAMA.  It is something that is geared towards web developers, and aims to build a more standards-compliant community.  It doesn’t index pages in the same way as Google, it in fact indexes the markup of a web page.  It answers the following type of questions:

  • How many <a> tags it has?
  • What is the most popular tag?
  • Does the page use css? Ajax?
  • How many websites actually validate?

Does this sound interesting to you as a web developer?  Well Opera has released some results of their search engine to wet your appetite:

  • The percentage of websites hosted on Apache is 67.72% compared to 25.91% for IIS.
  • Just over 50% of URLs had a doctype associated with them
  • the most popular html tag is the <head> tag
  • the <blink> tag was found 26807 times!
  • align=\”center\” was found 3457 times! (programmers  can see where this went wrong)
  • 4.13% of websites actually validated

Well I’m not sure if some of the above numbers stunned you, but I hope this MAMA project will help us all realize how much better we can code our websites.  We are sometimes on tight deadlines, but we need to take pride in how each and every line of code is written.
