R.I.P Geocities

I figured I would write up a quick post in honor of Geocities closing today.

Geocities holds many fond memories for me; without it maybe I never find my passion for web design. I was maybe a 10 year-old-boy who for some reason wanted to try and make a website. I mean it was 1998 and it was the cool thing to have.

Now for a low budget kid like me, making a Geocities site was the only option out there. Sure Blinking Text, and horrible animations ruled Geocities, but at that time that was the trend. We can now safely look bad and think… Look how for the internet has come!

Now to all those aspiring developers out there with low-budgets; I say to you start small, and connect with well known people in the industry. Blogs, Twitter, and Facebook now make this easier than ever. Back in 1998 there was none of this.

There is only one thing left to say… R.I.P Geocities

What did your first geocities website look like? Would love to hear your comments.

I have a friend who spent much of his time redesigning his web site each month to release episodes like a magazine.
