Review of “PHP for Absolute Beginners”

by Jason Lengstorf

Since I am giving this book away for my big giveaway it only makes sense that I let you know what I thought of it.

On that note please head over to my “Brenelz Relaunched” post to win a Tuts+ membership as well as some neat books including the one I will be reviewing.

First thing I would like to point out is that this book is not only for beginners as the title might suggest. I have been developing in PHP for 5+ years and still learned some neat tricks.

This book is written by Jason Lengstorf. He is a developer based in Missoula, MT. He runs a freelance business which he calls Ennui Design. Please be sure to follow him on twitter and give him props for the book.

Jason starts the book assuming you have absolutely no knowledge of PHP and works his way up to having you create a fully-functional blog system with comments. One reason I like this book so much is that it teaches you the PHP fundamentals using practical examples. Another books teach the concepts each separately and doesn’t show how they all come together at the end.

Chapter One starts with setting up your PHP development environment. This was something I learned well after the PHP itself. Learning the foundation from which PHP runs on is key to mastering the language in the future.

Chapter Two then goes into the basics of variables, functions, and operators. He doesn’t spend a great deal of time on each one, but this is for a reason. He doesn’t want to bore you with the nitty-gritty until you get to use these techniques in a practical situation. For myself I like fast-paced books that allow you do see example code rather than lengthy explanations.

Then later on Jason slightly touches on OOP PHP, and MVC patterns for more advanced users. By the end you will definitely have a greater understanding of a language no matter what skill level you are.
