Website Start-up: 20 Questions

We all know that when we first began dealing with clients it was not easy.  There are many clients out there that have no idea as to what they want on the website.  All they know is they want one.  How do you the designer / developer drag this information out of them without turning them away?  The following are some of the questions that you will need to ask in order to have the most accurate quote possible.

  1. Do they have an existing website?  Domain?
  2. Do they want to host with us?
  3. What software will I be forced to use on the server?
  4. What does their business do?
  5. Goals of the website?
  6. Who will the website target? Kids, or Adults
  7. What resolution will most visitors have?
  8. Will there be different stages? Stage 1, Stage 2
  9. What timeline do they expect? What is your timeline?
  10. How many pages will be needed?
  11. Does the company want to make their own updates?
  12. Will I need a database? How many tables?
  13. SSL Certificate needed for private information?
  14. Will I be using third-party software? Joomla, WordPress?
  15. Will I need to sub-contract some work out?
  16. Is this a client that will likely be adding features along the way?  Mark-up the project a bit to make up for some of this, or specify a $$$/hr for any additional work.
  17. How will the pages flow together? (Storyboard the pages)
  18. Do they want / need a Pay-Per-Click campaign?
  19. Will visitors be able to buy products on the website?
  20. How are we going to test this website? At what intervals?

Obviously, there many other things you should ask yourself / the client before quoting them on a project.  Some of these only come after a project has been started, but it is a good idea to have a bit of an idea prior to starting.

What am I missing?  Let me know.

I think the “Website Start-up” part of your post title is a bit misleading.
Its more like “20 Questions to ask before a web design gig”.
